There is one important task new homeowners should never overlook: changing the locks. Here are some tips.

· Contact several locksmiths and obtain estimates. Ask about training, previous jobs, insurance, and emergency service costs.

· Once a locksmith is found, keep contact information in a purse, wallet or smartphone — in case you are ever locked out.

· Re-keying (or giving a lock new pins, springs, and keys) could be an affordable alternative to changing locks.

· Make copies of new keys once locks are re-keyed or changed.

· Install a deadbolt for added security. Also, if windows are near the front door, consider a double cylinder lock (which requires a key).
